Petaluma City Parks Grazing Program,a first-of-its-kind sustainable grazing plan for vegetation management and ecological regeneration for all open space parks in the City of Petaluma

Facilitated by Sarah Keiser of Wild Oat Hollow, Keiser is working to ensure the grazing is ecologically regenerative and offers carbon sequestration, a method that increases soil organic matter (SOM), revitalizes native plants and provides sustainable vegetation management for long term ecosystem health and a fire safe community across all open space parks including Oak Hill, Mansion Knolls, West Ridge, Country Club & Arroyo open space across 46 acres.

Petaluma is one of three California cities that won Cool City Challenge grants in January 2022 along with Los Angeles and Irvine and one of the first three cities participating in the Cool City Challenge Climate Framework Action Plan.

Prescribed grazing at parks and throughout public places is an extremely effective tool for vegetation management and it increases SOM (soil organic matter) by transforming fire fuel loads into soil building manure, while reducing carbon output through the use of gas powered tools.

The project further supports “Cool Petaluma,” and the city’s campaign to reach carbon neutrality by 2030.
